Narrows Lock Ride 2019
On July 10, 2019, I decided to go for a ride on my motorbike to visit the Narrows Locks on the Rideau Canal. I had heard other bikers tell me that the road to the lock was great for biking. I wanted to try that road, but more important for me was to see the lock. The year before I had started a project to visit every lock on the Rideau Canal by motorbike.
Downhill Skiing 2015
My 2015 down hill ski adventures. To date, the best year of skiing I have had since I took up the sport in early 2013. The hills I tackled …
- Mont Grand-Fond east of Quebec City (my first time there)
- Mont Massif east of Quebec City (also my first time there)
- Calabogie Peaks west of Ottawa (one of my favourite ski haunts).Pinecrest Creek - April 2021
The Pinecrest Creek (Nepean, Ontario)
The Pinecrest Creek is 4.2 km long and originates near Woodruffe Avenue and West Hunt Club Road. The creek flows into the Ottawa River about 1 km downstream from the Deschênes Rapids. Only 2.5 km of the creek is open to the air and the remaining portions of the creek have been placed underground. The creek surfaces on the north side of Baseline Road across the College Square Mall, stays above ground to just south of Carling Avenue, where it goes underground again under Carling Avenue, the Lincoln Fields Transitway Station and comes above ground on the north side of the Sir John A Macdonal Parkway. Because of urbanization, the natural headwater drainage features of the creek have been replaced by stormwater drainage. Pinecrest Creek is significantly challenged environmentally by pollution, degradation of water quality, the presence of invasive plat life, fish migratory obstructions and restricted corridors for wildlife. Only about 4% of the creek has remained with no human alteration.
This video is the exploration along the creek bed by my partner and I on April 21 & 25, 2021.Bumble Bees & Thistle
I was visiting some friends who had a large thistle plant on their property, and it was swarming with bumble bees collecting nectar and pollen. I had my iPhone camera with me so I took a few photos and a short video, and then later pulled them together in a short video with the Adobe Lightroom software on my iPhone. Oh yea, the photo of me taking the photos was taken by one of my friends.
The Weekly Wednesday Arnprior Nylene Plant Train
During the fall of 2020, while taking photos of an old train bridge in Galetta, Ontario, I discovered that what I thought was an abandoned rail line was used once a week, every Wednesday, by a short train transporting material to the Nylene plant in Arnprior, Ontario. On Wednesday, April 28, 2021, my partner Elizabeth and I decided to see this train for ourselves. We picked a spot in the west end of Ottawa where we knew the train would go by, and while there we discovered that the speed of the train was about 5mph. So after it went by, we hopped in the car and drove to Galetta to see the train going over the old bridge.

Robot Spider
I had just finished making a robot spider and with the pandemic shutting everything down, I spent an afternoon making this short and fun video of my new robot spider doing its thing. I had a few large tarantula-looking spiders made out of banana leaves and wire, so they were recruited for this wee movie.
Ajax the Steam Engine
“Ajax”, a prized possession of Beth Tyler, had a great workout in the model trainyard at the Cumberland Heritage Village Museum, Cumberland, Ontario. Ajax is a real steam driven train and uses butane as the fuel. The model railway train yard at the museum is operated by the "Ottawa Valley Live Steamers and Model Engineers” (OVLSME) organization.
Chute de Plaisance, Plaisance, Québec
Two of my biker friends and I decided to visit Chute de Plaisance near Plaisance, Québec. It was a gorgeous day for a motorbike ride and a picnic lunch. This area was once a mill town and since has become a wonderful tourist attraction.

My friend Lyane and I decided to go for a motorcycle ride one fine day and she suggested that we ride up to the Les Chutes Coulonge in Mansfield, Québec. I had never been there and I love waterfalls so it didn't take me long to agree to her proposal. I was thoroughly impressed with the falls. Years ago this had been an old logging area and you can still see the remains of a concrete logging chute from the top of the falls and down the canyon.

I was visiting some friends and had my camera set up to take slow motion videos of hummingbirds that were attracted to the feeder. I caught some nice clips of the hummingbirds. As an added bonus, a wasp flew in and you can see that the hummingbird is quite cautious about hanging around the feeder while the wasp was having its meal.
Time Lapse Cloud Experiments
I had been wanting to experiment with time-lapse photography for a long time, and I finally purchased a camera that would do this photography style justice. This video is a series of clips taken of clouds using different video speeds and under different lighting conditions.
Cormorant Rescue (October 1, 2017)
My partner and I were visiting the Mud Lake area when we met a photographer who was concerned that a cormorant was tangled in a fishing line in the Ottawa River. My partner, a bird lover, didn't hesitate and waded into the water fully dressed, rescued the cormorant and brought it to shore so we could remove the fishing line. We then brought the bird to a local bird rescue shelter.

A Day with the Ottawa Valley Live Steamers & Model Engineers
A day’s outing riding the trains of the "Ottawa Valley Live Steamers and Model Engineers” (OVLSME) organization at the Cumberland Historical Village Museum in Cumberland, Ontario. OVLSME maintains and operates a section of model railroad track at the museum. Some of the trains are large enough to carry a small group of people. You can read more about them at their official web site at http://ovlsme.x10host.com/index.html.

Riding the Trolley
On August 1, 2015, my friend Elizabeth and I finally made time to visit the Exporail in the town of Saint-Constant on the south shore of Montreal. Exporail http://www.exporail.org/en/welcome-to-exporail/) is Canada's largest train museum. Of the many exhibits at the museum, Elizabeth and I became attached to the Montreal streetcar ride. This was a great way for us to let the inner children out.
Riding the Rails
I am fortunate, as a train lover, to live a relatively short drive between two Canadian train museums, Expo Rail in St. Constant, Quebec and The Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario in Smith Falls, Ontario. These photos were taken during several visits to both of these train museums.

Ottawa Flooding 2017
At the beginning of May 2017, the Ottawa River and Rideau River reached dangerous water levels causing much damage along the shorelines.
This video is made up of a series of photos taken on May 7, 8 & 9 of the flooding of the Ottawa and Rideau Rivers from the Rideau Falls to Andrew Haydon Park, with a few views of the Ottawa River from the Gatineau side of the river.Vimy Ridge Monument Statues
The Vimy Memorial took 10 years to complete and was unveiled on July 26, 1936.
The Canadian War Museum has custody of 17 of the 20 plaster figures that were created by the sculptor Walter Seymour Allward for his creation of the Vimy Memorial located at Vimy Ridge in France. These plaster figures were created between 1925 and 1930. Professional stone carvers worked from the design of these plaster casts to create the final statues on the Vimy Memorial.
In 1937 the plaster figures were packed in crates and shipped to Canada, where they were stored by the Department of Public Works as part of the Canadian War Museum artifact collection. The Department of Veteran Affairs had custody of the plaster figures, and on May 3, 1960 informed the museum that “…the Minister of Veterans Affairs had agreed that the models may be destroyed” so long as photographs were taken of them first.
That did not happen, and the 17 plaster figures can be viewed by the public at the Canadian War Museum. The remaining 3 plaster figures are on display in the Military Communications and Electronics Museum at the Canadian Forces Base in Kingston.

Old, Lost, Forgotten or Abandoned
In the past, I have suffered from "abandonment anxiety" to the point that the anxiety would turn into panic and seriously prevent me from leading the life I want to lead. Eventually I was able to work through this , and in the process I became fascinated by objects that appeared to be abandoned. I used my photography skills to try and capture the feeling of the loneliness of these objects.
Canadian Museum of Nature Butterfly Exhibit - March 22, 2018
Yet another visit to the Canadian Museum of Nature "Butterfly Exhibit". These wee creatures are beautiful and delicate. You can wander around the open area and they flit about you, and if you wear bright colour clothing, they will land on you. You need to constantly watch where you step because sometimes they land on the floor.
Thorne Lake - Gravenhurst (September 2015)
During September 2015, a friend and I rented a cabin on the shore of Thorne Lake near Gravenhurst, Ontario. The lake was small and the area isolated, so for a week we enjoyed a lot of peace and quiet. The cabin rental came with a row boat and paddle boat, and I would get my day going at 6:00 am just as the sun was coming up, and take the row boat out on the lake. It was early fall and some of the maple trees were starting to change colour. I'd do a vacation like this again at the drop of a hat.
St Martins Photographic Workshop
During August 2015, I attended a 7-day photographic workshop at St Martins, New Brunswick. I took the opportunity while I was there to explore some of the countryside I was traveling through to get to St Martins and back home to Ottawa.

New York State of Mind
A friend and I decided in October 2013 that we wanted a break from our traditional Christmas time, and we joked about traveling to New York City an spending Christmas there. What started as a joke became reality. I had been to New York City once in my life when I was 4 years old, so my memory of the place was long gone. I spent my time there exploring Manhattan, mostly on foot, an there were only two times when I left the island. One was to see the Statue of Liberty an the other was to take the Staten Island Ferry. This video is some of my favourite memories of that trip.
